Word processing woes

Burgess on using a computer: ‘To type an acute accent or an umlaut is a major operation. Whole pages of hard work unaccountably disappear. The printing machine insists on justifying the lines and produces gate-toothed copy of little elegance….I typed the first line of The Waste Land [“April is the cruellest month, breeding”] on [a PC] and it would not accept the second [“Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing”] because of the alleged bad syntax of the first.’
