I live on the California coast, and it’s amazing how similar Hove is to places like Long Beach, complete with an Enterprise Car Rental. One question: is there an actual Fitzherbert Avenue?

I’ve just had a look at Long Beach on Google Images, and I see what you mean. Long Beach and Hove both smell a little of decay — the decay of Europe and America — the only vigour being provided by the multinational commercial organisation, this Enterprise Car Rental that you point out. Such a firm is of no country, no place, and even its ownership is trans-national; yet it is omnipresent. California and Britain are both bankrupt, financially and morally, but I think I prefer the California coast (assuming I was well-off). It rains less and is sunnier.

I don’t believe there is a Fitzherbert Avene in Hove.

And the location of the “furnished rooms” (presumably one of those Edwardian flats) where Burgess lived with his first wife is unknown.

Thanks for visiting, Mr Chatt, and a happy new year to you.
