Helluva good read

Anthony Burgess’s novel Devil of a State (1961) is about the north Borneo territory of Brunei (then a British protectorate, now an independent state), which Burgess renamed Naraka, Malayo-Arabic for Hell. (For legal reasons the name was changed to ‘Dunia’ and the action transposed to East Africa.) It is the last in the series of Burgess’s ‘exotic’ novels.
